The photography of Helena Martins
When working as a photographer, Helena Martins is an artist and a photojournalist for a London's newspaper and online magazines.
After loosing all her hearing, due to Bilateral Meniere Disease, Helena turned to photography as a mean to continue to feel alive, as she explained in an interview to Nikon magazine: "With deafness the feeling of isolation was immense. I felt that with photography, I was able to continue to communicate with the world, to hear the world. I fell that I see things differently, now, that I'm deaf"
A natural born urban, Helena feels more comfortable in a urban environment. Passionate about humankind, she likes to combine her love for urban spaces with the human presence, even if at times, no human being is seen on the image.
Helena bought her first film camera in the 90's and went to study photography as a way to document her surroundings. However, as she usually says: "Surf got in the way. It was way cooler to go out on a VW Kombi van discovering surf spots and waves, than to be alone in a dark room developing photos".
It was only in 2010 that she returned to photography, this time, all digital.
She's currently working on 3 projects to follow onto exhibitions in London and Lisbon.
She's also enjoying being a little bit of a Cyborg. After being fitted with a Bionic Ear implant, which allows her to follow, again, conversations with others.
